A Symphony of Flavors: Ham, Asparagus, and Caramelized Onions

At the heart of this deep-dish sensation lies a harmonious blend of carefully selected ingredients. We start with succulent ham, which not only provides a hearty, savory depth but also offers a fantastic opportunity to utilize any leftover ham you might have from a previous meal. This makes the recipe both delicious and economical, minimizing food waste while maximizing flavor.

Next, we introduce fresh, vibrant asparagus. Its slightly bitter, earthy notes cut through the richness of the ham and custard, adding a delightful crunch and a burst of seasonal freshness. The combination of these two classic ingredients creates a truly balanced and inviting flavor profile.

But what truly elevates this quiche is the generous addition of caramelized onions. Slowly cooked to a deep golden-brown perfection, these onions transform into sweet, buttery ribbons that infuse the entire dish with an unparalleled depth of flavor. Their rich, savory-sweet essence is the secret ingredient that makes this quiche utterly addictive and distinguishes it from any other. We can’t pick a favorite part, as each component contributes to a flawless whole.

For the cheese, this recipe calls for Swiss, known for its nutty and slightly sweet notes that complement the other ingredients beautifully. However, the beauty of quiche lies in its adaptability. Feel free to experiment with other cheeses like creamy Monterey Jack, spicy pepper jack for a kick, or sharp white cheddar for a more pronounced tang. Each choice will bring its own unique character to the dish, allowing you to tailor it to your personal preference.

Its substantial filling and rich flavors make it robust enough to serve as a satisfying and hearty dinner. Pair it with a simple green salad for a complete and wholesome meal that requires minimal effort after a busy day.

And let’s not forget about leftovers! If you’re lucky enough to have any slices remaining, you’re in for a treat. Leftover quiche, whether enjoyed cold or reheated gently, is absolutely fantastic. It makes for a quick and easy breakfast the next morning, a convenient grab-and-go lunch, or even a late-night snack. The flavors often meld and deepen overnight, making the second serving just as, if not more, enjoyable than the first.

This Deep Dish Ham and Asparagus Quiche with Caramelized Onions truly offers the best of both worlds: gourmet flavor with practical convenience. Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 large onions yellow, Vidalia, or other sweet variety, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 12 oz cooked ham, cubed (great for leftovers!)
  • 1 small bunch asparagus, trimmed and cut into small pieces
  • 6 oz shredded cheese, Swiss or Monterey Jack recommended, or try white cheddar
  • 7 large eggs
  • 3 cups heavy cream
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 store-bought refrigerated pie crust or your favorite homemade recipe

Instructions

  • Carefully press the pie crust evenly into a 9-inch springform pan, ensuring it extends up the sides. To prevent any leaks during baking, wrap aluminum foil securely around the bottom of the pan and up its sides. Place the prepared springform pan on a baking sheet and refrigerate it while you prepare the filling.
  • In a large skillet, add the olive oil, then toss in the thinly sliced onions and water. Cook this mixture over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, for about 30 minutes, or until the onions become beautifully soft, translucent, and deeply caramelized to a golden-brown hue. This slow process is key to their sweet flavor.
  • Next, add the cubed ham to the skillet with the caramelized onions. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, for an additional 5 minutes, allowing the ham to warm through and its flavors to meld with the onions.
  • Stir in the trimmed and chopped asparagus pieces. Cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the asparagus is bright green and slightly tender-crisp. Remove the skillet from the heat and set the ham and asparagus mixture aside.
  • Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).
  • In a separate large mixing bowl, crack the eggs and add the heavy cream, salt, and pepper. Whisk these ingredients together thoroughly until the mixture is well combined and slightly frothy.
  • Retrieve your chilled pie crust. Evenly spread about two-thirds of the ham, asparagus, and caramelized onion mixture over the bottom of the crust. Then, sprinkle two-thirds of the shredded cheese over this layer.
  • Carefully pour about two-thirds of the egg mixture over the fillings in the pie crust.
  • Repeat the layering process: add the remaining ham mixture, followed by the remaining cheese, and finally, pour the rest of the egg mixture over the top. The filling should reach approximately 1/2 inch from the top edge of the pie crust. If you happen to have any extra ingredients, save them for a delicious scramble the following morning!
  • Loosely cover the entire quiche with aluminum foil to prevent excessive browning and bake for approximately 90 minutes. After this time, remove the foil and continue baking for another 20 to 30 minutes, or until the quiche appears mostly set but still has a slight, delicate jiggle in the very center when gently shaken. This indicates a perfectly cooked, creamy interior.
  • Once baked, carefully remove the quiche from the oven. Allow it to cool on a wire rack for about 30 to 45 minutes before slicing and serving. This cooling period is crucial for the quiche to set properly and ensures clean, beautiful slices.
  • Serve your magnificent quiche warm, at room temperature, or even cold – all ways are equally delightful depending on your preference!

Notes

If you plan to make this quiche the day before serving, ensure it cools completely to room temperature on a cooling rack. Once cooled, cover it tightly and refrigerate. When ready to serve, remove it from the fridge about 45 minutes beforehand to allow it to come closer to room temperature for optimal flavor and texture.

Tips for Quiche Perfection & Variations

Achieving quiche perfection is simpler than you might think, and a few expert tips can make all the difference. For that deep-dish effect, a springform pan is ideal, as it allows for a taller quiche and easy removal without damaging the crust. Ensure your caramelized onions are truly golden and sweet; patience is key here, as rushing the process will diminish their flavor. When it comes to the custard, avoid over-whisking, as too much air can lead to a soufflé-like texture that may fall. A gentle whisk until just combined is perfect.

Feeling adventurous? This quiche recipe is incredibly adaptable to various fillings. Consider swapping ham for crumbled bacon, cooked sausage, or even smoked salmon for a different protein twist. For vegetarian options, sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, mushrooms, or roasted red peppers would be delicious additions. You can also experiment with different herbs like fresh thyme, chives, or parsley to enhance the flavor profile. Don’t be afraid to make this recipe your own!

Frequently Asked Questions About Deep Dish Quiche

Can I use a regular pie plate instead of a springform pan?

While a springform pan is recommended for its deep-dish capabilities and ease of serving, you can certainly use a regular 9-inch deep-dish pie plate. Just be aware that the quiche might not be as tall, and you may need to adjust baking time slightly. You might also want to serve directly from the pie plate.

How do I prevent a soggy bottom crust?

Several tricks help prevent a soggy crust. First, make sure your pie crust is very cold before adding the filling. Blind baking (pre-baking) the crust for 10-15 minutes before adding the filling can also help, especially if you’re concerned. Additionally, wrapping the bottom of your springform pan with foil helps to seal it and prevent any liquid from seeping out, which can also contribute to a soggy crust.

Can I freeze this quiche?

Yes, quiche freezes beautifully! Allow the baked quiche to cool completely to room temperature. You can then wrap individual slices or the entire quiche (after slicing for easier portioning) tightly in plastic wrap, then in aluminum foil. Freeze for up to 2-3 months. To reheat, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and warm gently in the oven at 300°F (150°C) until heated through.
