Indulge in the Best Chocolate Pecan Pie Bars for Memorable Holidays

The holiday season unfailingly brings with it a heartfelt craving for comforting, indulgent desserts that warm the soul and satisfy every sweet tooth. While a traditional pecan pie certainly holds a special place in our hearts, sometimes the thought of mastering a delicate, flaky pie crust and intricate crimping can feel like a daunting task amidst the bustling holiday preparations. That’s precisely where these incredible Chocolate Pecan Pie Bars shine! This recipe ingeniously combines the timeless, beloved flavors of a rich pecan pie with the irresistible added delight of chocolate, all conveniently presented in an easy-to-serve bar format. This makes them a true game-changer for any festive gathering, offering a sophisticated dessert without the fuss. They are infinitely simpler to prepare than a full-sized pie, making them the ideal choice for busy bakers (and even those who, like me, haven’t quite mastered the art of a perfect pie crust!).

Why These Chocolate Pecan Pie Bars Will Be Your New Holiday Favorite

There are countless reasons to wholeheartedly embrace and fall in love with these delightful chocolate pecan pie bars. First and foremost, their unparalleled ease of preparation sets them apart. You completely sidestep the stress and time-consuming effort of rolling out a perfect pie dough and meticulously crimping its edges. Instead, a simple, buttery press-in shortbread crust forms the delectable foundation for these decadent treats, requiring minimal effort.

Secondly, bars are inherently far more portable and significantly easier to serve than traditional pies. Imagine hosting a lively, casual holiday get-together or attending a festive potluck – there’s no need for individual plates and forks for every guest. Instead, everyone can simply grab a neatly sliced bar and enjoy its deliciousness on the go. This makes them an absolutely perfect choice for bustling holiday parties, intimate family dinners, or even a cozy evening snack by the fireplace. Moreover, with their clean, uniform slices, these bars present just as impressively as a traditional pie, if not more so, especially when artfully piled high on a serving platter or arranged on a dessert buffet.

What truly elevates these bars to a league of their own is the exquisite and harmonious blend of textures and flavors. You start with that rich, buttery shortbread crust, which provides a delightful crispness. This contrasts beautifully with the gooey, sweet pecan filling, brimming with toasted pecans that offer an essential earthy crunch. The star of this recipe, of course, is the irresistible touch of chocolate. The subtle, deep, and slightly bitter notes of unsweetened cocoa powder woven into the filling perfectly complement the robust sweetness of the condensed milk, while generous amounts of semi-sweet chocolate chips melt into luscious pockets of chocolatey goodness, creating a truly unforgettable experience. It’s a symphony for the senses that will undoubtedly have everyone reaching for a second (and perhaps even a third!) piece.

Crafting the Perfect Chocolate Pecan Pie Bars: A Detailed Step-by-Step Guide

These chocolate pecan pie bars truly represent the epitome of decadent holiday treats. They are surprisingly straightforward and simple to make, yet they consistently deliver an impressive flavor and texture profile that no one can resist. Let’s carefully break down the magic behind creating these utterly irresistible bars, ensuring your baking success.

The Buttery Shortbread Crust: A Foundation of Flavor

Every truly great bar dessert begins with a fantastic base, and for these pecan pie bars, it’s a sublime buttery shortbread crust. Crafted with cold, cubed unsalted butter, delicate powdered sugar, and all-purpose flour, this crust comes together incredibly quickly. The essential key to achieving its perfect texture is to carefully cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. This meticulous step ensures a tender, flaky, and rich foundation after its initial bake. This pre-baked crust serves as a perfect, sturdy barrier for the gooey pecan filling, effectively preventing any sogginess and adding a delightful textural contrast with every bite.

The Rich Chocolate Pecan Filling: A Decadent Delight

The undeniable star of this culinary show is, of course, the filling. It’s a delightful and harmonious combination of creamy sweetened condensed milk, robust unsweetened cocoa powder, plenty of luscious semi-sweet chocolate chips, and a generous quantity of crunchy pecan halves. The sweetened condensed milk provides that signature sticky, sweet base that caramelizes beautifully and develops incredible depth of flavor as it bakes. The unsweetened cocoa powder expertly infuses a deep, rich chocolate flavor throughout the entire filling, creating a complex and satisfying taste. Meanwhile, the semi-sweet chocolate chips melt into irresistible, molten pockets of chocolatey goodness, adding an extra layer of indulgence. And the pecans? They are indispensable, offering that essential nutty flavor and satisfying crunch that defines a truly great pecan pie and elevates these bars to perfection. A final, artful sprinkle of mini chocolate chips immediately after baking adds an extra touch of sweetness, a textural pop, and visual appeal that makes them even more enticing.

Essential Tips for Baking Success

  • Preparation is Paramount: Lining your 9×13 inch baking pan with foil is absolutely crucial for easy removal and clean cutting once the bars are cooled. Make sure the foil extends over two edges of the pan to create handles. And whatever you do, do not skip lightly spraying the foil with cooking spray to prevent sticking!
  • Precision in Baking: While you want the filling to be perfectly set, it’s important to resist the urge to overbake. Overbaking can sadly lead to a dry, tough crust or an overly firm, less gooey filling. Keep a close eye on the bars, especially during the last few minutes of baking, and remove them once the filling looks set but still slightly soft in the center.
  • Patience for Perfection: Allowing the bars to cool completely is a virtue here! This step is critical. You must let the bars cool entirely on a wire rack before attempting to cut them. This ensures not only beautifully clean slices but also allows the gooey filling to fully set, preventing a messy, crumbly outcome. For even cleaner, sharper cuts, consider chilling them briefly in the refrigerator for about an hour after they’ve reached room temperature.
  • Optimal Storage: To maintain their freshness and deliciousness, store any leftover chocolate pecan pie bars in an airtight container. They will keep beautifully at room temperature for up to 3-4 days, or you can extend their life by storing them in the refrigerator for up to a week. These bars also freeze wonderfully for longer-term storage, making them an excellent option for preparing ahead of time for future enjoyment.

I wholeheartedly recommend that you go check out Stephanie’s wonderfulBlondies, Brownies, and Bars and make sure to grab a copy for yourself, and perhaps a few more for all the dedicated bakers and dessert lovers in your life. Course: Dessert

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Total Time: 40 minutes

Servings: 28 bars

Author: Trish – Mom On Timeout

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 14 oz (1 can) sweetened condensed milk
  • 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups (1 12 oz bag) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 8 oz (1 bag) pecan halves
  • 1/3 cup mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with foil, ensuring the foil extends over two edges of the pan for easy removal. Lightly spray the foil with cooking spray.
  3. In a large bowl, use a pastry cutter or a fork to cut the cold, cubed butter, powdered sugar, and all-purpose flour together until the mixture is crumbly and well combined.
  4. Press the crumbly crust mixture evenly and firmly into the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake for 12 minutes.
  5. While the crust is baking, combine the sweetened condensed milk and unsweetened cocoa powder in a small bowl. Stir them together until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Set aside.
  6. Once the crust has finished baking, carefully remove the pan from the oven. Evenly sprinkle the 2 cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips and all the pecan halves over the warm, partially baked crust.
  7. Carefully pour the chocolate condensed milk mixture evenly over the top of the chocolate chips and pecans, spreading it gently to cover the surface.
  8. Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 15 to 18 minutes, or until the filling is set, appears lightly golden, and is no longer jiggly in the center.
  9. Immediately after removing the pan from the oven, sprinkle the top generously with the mini chocolate chips. The residual heat from the bars will gently melt them, creating a beautiful, glossy finish.
  10. Allow the bars to cool completely on a wire rack before attempting to cut them. This step is crucial for clean, neat slices. For the best results and very clean cuts, you can chill them in the refrigerator for about an hour after they’ve cooled to room temperature. Store any leftover bars in an airtight container at room temperature.
