Embrace the Flavors of Fall with Deep Dish Dutch Apple Pie
When autumn leaves begin to change and a crispness fills the air, there’s one dessert that consistently calls my name: apple pie. The comforting aroma of baked apples mingling with warm cinnamon is simply intoxicating. But why settle for an ordinary apple pie when you can elevate it to an extraordinary Deep Dish Dutch Apple Pie? This recipe takes everything you love about classic apple pie and amplifies it with a generous, thick filling and an unbelievably crunchy streusel topping.
A few weeks ago, I shared my highly-rated recipe for homemade apple pie filling. If you haven’t tried it yet, trust me, it’s a game-changer! After showing a peek of a pie I made with that very filling, I realized I had left you all hanging without the full recipe for the pie itself. My apologies! Your enthusiastic requests made it clear, and so today, I am thrilled to finally share the complete, detailed recipe for this magnificent Deep Dish Dutch Apple Pie. Prepare to impress everyone at your next gathering!
What Makes a Dutch Apple Pie Special?
Unlike a traditional double-crust apple pie, a Dutch apple pie (also known as a crumble or streusel-top apple pie) features a buttery, crumbly topping instead of a second pastry layer. This streusel, often made with flour, sugar, butter, and sometimes oats and nuts, adds an incredible textural contrast to the soft, tender apple filling. The deep-dish aspect means more of that glorious filling in every slice, making it a truly satisfying and decadent dessert.

The Secret to Effortless Slices: A Springform Pan
One of my favorite secrets for baking and serving this deep-dish pie is using a springform pan. This ingenious baking tool makes cutting and serving slices incredibly easy. Say goodbye to struggling with crumbly crusts and messy presentations! The removable sides allow you to lift the entire pie away, showcasing its beautiful form and ensuring every slice comes out perfectly intact. Another fantastic benefit of using a springform pan is that its sturdy sides help protect the pie crust from over-browning, ensuring a perfectly golden finish. Just look at how stunningly gorgeous this pie turns out!

Mastering the Perfect Pie: My Tried-and-True Tricks
Achieving a picture-perfect, delectable pie every time is easier than you think, especially with these two essential tricks I’m excited to share. I admit, I can be a bit particular when it comes to slicing pies – I strive for neat, clean cuts that hold their shape. Fortunately, these tips work entirely in your favor, ensuring a flawless result that’s as impressive to look at as it is to eat.
1. The Cornstarch Thickening Method: My first trick involves whisking cornstarch directly into the drained liquid from the apple pie filling. This crucial step ensures your pie filling sets beautifully, preventing it from becoming watery or runny. A firm, luscious filling that stays in place is key to those coveted clean slices. The cornstarch works by absorbing excess moisture and creating a stable, gel-like consistency, allowing the filling to hold its shape perfectly even when warm.

2. The Egg White Barrier: My second tip focuses on the crust. Before adding the apple filling, I highly recommend lightly brushing the bottom and sides of your pie crust with a beaten egg white. This creates an invisible barrier, effectively preventing the crust from becoming soggy. The egg white bakes into a thin, protective layer that seals the crust, ensuring it remains wonderfully flaky and crisp, even when filled with moist apples. This is particularly important for deep-dish pies, where the filling volume is greater. Again, this method significantly contributes to achieving those beautiful, clean slices I obsess over!

Serving Your Deep Dish Dutch Apple Pie
While the choice of how to serve this pie is entirely up to you, my husband would strongly argue that it’s practically a culinary sin not to pair apple pie with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. And for good measure, a decadent drizzle of caramel sauce is non-negotiable in our household! And I must admit, he wins this argument every single time. The contrast of the warm, spiced apples with the cold, melting ice cream and sweet caramel creates an unforgettable dessert experience that truly defines comfort. Other delicious options include a dollop of fresh whipped cream, a sprinkle of toasted pecans, or even a slice of sharp cheddar cheese for a more traditional pairing. No matter how you choose to enjoy it, this pie is guaranteed to be a hit!

Enjoy every delightful bite!

Deep Dish Dutch Apple Pie
Ingredients
Pie Crust
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 8 tbsp butter cold and cubed
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3 tbsp ice water 3 to 4 tbsp
- 1 egg white lightly beaten
Apple Pie Filling
- 6 cups apple pie filling
- 3 tbsp corn starch
Streusel Topping
- 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup oats
- 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup pecan halves
- 6 tbsp cold butter cut into small pieces
Instructions
Pie Crust
-
Combine flour, sugar, and salt in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse a few times until well mixed.
-
Add the VERY cold, cubed butter and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
-
Add 2 tablespoons of ICE water and pulse a few times to incorporate the water.
-
Add an additional tablespoon of water and pulse until the dough just begins to come together as a ball. If the dough still appears dry, add one more tablespoon of ice water and pulse until combined. Be careful not to overmix.
-
Roll the dough out onto a lightly floured surface into a circle approximately 1/8-inch thick and 12 inches in diameter.
-
Carefully fold the dough into quarters and gently transfer it to a 9-inch springform pan.
-
Unfold the crust and carefully press it into the bottom and up the sides of the pan, forming a border about 2 inches high. Crimp the edges with a fork for a decorative finish, if desired.
-
Place the pan with the crust into the freezer (or refrigerator) for at least 30 minutes while you prepare the apple filling and streusel topping. This helps prevent shrinkage.
Apple Pie Filling
-
Drain about 1/2 cup of liquid from your prepared apple pie filling into a large bowl.
-
Add the cornstarch to the drained liquid and whisk vigorously until completely smooth and no lumps remain. This creates a thickening slurry.
-
Pour the rest of the apple pie filling into the bowl with the thickened liquid and stir gently to combine everything evenly.
-
Set the filling aside.
Streusel Topping
-
Add all of the streusel ingredients (flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, pecan halves, and cold butter pieces) into a food processor. Pulse until the mixture forms coarse crumbs, with the largest pieces being about the size of a pea or smaller. Alternatively, you can mix by hand in a bowl using a pastry blender or your fingertips until crumbly.
-
Set the streusel topping aside.
Assembly & Baking
-
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
-
Remove the chilled pie crust from the freezer. Lightly brush the bottom and sides of the crust with the beaten egg white. This crucial step creates a barrier that prevents the crust from becoming soggy, ensuring a crisp, flaky base.
-
Gently pour the prepared apple pie filling into the egg white-brushed crust, spreading it evenly.
-
Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.
-
After 15 minutes, carefully remove the pie from the oven. Evenly spread the streusel topping layer over the top of the hot apple filling.
-
Reduce the oven heat to 350°F (175°C). Return the pie to the oven and bake for an additional 25 to 30 minutes, or until the streusel topping is beautifully golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling. If the topping browns too quickly, you can lightly tent the pie with foil.
-
Once baked, remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool completely on a wire rack before attempting to remove it from the springform pan. This cooling period is essential for the filling to fully set, ensuring clean slices.
-
Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of homemade caramel sauce, if desired. Enjoy your homemade masterpiece!
